VoIP Days Lisbon

Once again it was our privilege to be asked by our friends at Hansecom to speak at this event. MD Guy Redmill delivered a keynote speech on the opportunity that Broadband services provide, both from the perspective of the SME market and that of operators seeking to differentiate themselves. You can view our presentation here. One of the nice things about this event is that way in which it combines both international and local speakers. The audience primarily comes from Portugal, but issues of both national and international relevance are addressed.

IMS World Forum

This year’s IMS World Forum in Paris was a huge success, both in terms of numbers of attendees and the quality of the presentations. Although many blogs have been filled with scepticism regarding IMS, it was interesting to note the generally positive view of the technology. At last, there was some realism in terms of likely deployment times, with a broad consensus that mass service rollout was unlikely until 2010 at the earliest. Marc LeClerc from Ericsson commented that perceptions of “internet time” were unrealistic for IMS and shouldn’t be applied to projections. Such unrealistic timeframes have been applied to IMS since the industry started to gather momentum in around 2005, but it is a mistake to apply the same model that was applied to the internet to something that is a fundamental change in telecoms and IT service delivery.

11th Annual Meeting of ACIST

11th Annual Meeting of ACIST. Our friends at Hansecom asked us to recommend a keynote speaker for the 11th annual meeting of Associação Comerciantes e Instaladores de Sistemas de Telecomunicações (ACIST) in Portugal. We were happy to oblige and, together with Norton Lokken from Gintel, we wrote this presentation.

It emerged from our research that Portugal has a very high proportion of enterprises that have less than 20 employees (93%!). This means that their IT and communications requirements are probably rather diverse and unlikely to be met by standard service offerings. This might explain why enterprise broadband adoption is relatively low (at least according to the figures we found). Stimulating the market with more flexible, easily customised solutions might go a long way to making broadband attractive to business users and growing penetration. This goes back to Mr Magaya’s comments – find out what the customer wants! Of course, the operators will need to be able to deliver a wide range of customisable services in a cost effective manner, but there are ways to do that!

SDP Global Congress

Our panel threatened to overrun its allotted time. Whether that was because of our discussion, or previous timekeeping issues, we cannot say! However, this was a stimulating event and perhaps the main theme that emerged was explicit recognition that there are no definitive standards either for what an SDP is, or how to put one together. At some point during the proceedings, SDPs morphed into Service Delivery Frameworks, further adding to the variety. Perhaps the most memorable presentation came from Denis Magaya of Cell C in South Africa. He showed how some of the considerations of the conference need to be reviewed in the light of specific markets and forcefully argued that operators should focus on single services that can generate mass market momentum. Look at what the customer wants, and start from there! Wise words indeed.

Debate around IMS seems to be polarised at present

Debate around IMS seems to be polarised at present. There are those who believe wholeheartedly in the vision of 3GPP and other standards bodies, and there are those who consider the whole thing completely unnecessary. I consider that, as with many things, the truth is somewhere in between.
