RCS - Three letters in search of an Audience

Guy Redmill spoke at the recent RCS Forum in Barcelona and presented preliminary findings from some on-going research on operator attitudes to RCS conducted with Moriana Group. We shall complete this study in due course, but the conference was extremely interesting. There have now been a number of operator trials, although no commercial launch has been announced (at the time of the event). This is proving to be a thorny problem.

5 steps to an effective keyword strategy: step 3 - Long tail modifiers and searcher intention

So armed with our core term we begin the hunt for long tail keywords.

We are looking for modifiers, additional words or phrases that turn our vague, competitive core words into focused, niche long tailed keywords. These are the keywords that we can rank well for: the terms that will help to drive motivated traffic to our site.

It's a slightly daunting prospect.

WDM: Different market, same challenges

Attending a recent WDM conference was instructive in many ways. Perhaps the most striking conclusion is that everyone is facing the same set of challenge in the telecoms industry, at least for the deployment of new technologies. In an interesting panel discussion, a number of migration strategies to new transport networks were discussed. Variously, the following were proposed (we paraphrase, of course):

Policy: Increasingly Important to Get Right

Policy is a theme to which we shall return on an increasingly frequent basis, as the topic of policy management seems certain to become one of the hot issues of the year. It seems that the notion of free and unlimited bandwidth may finally be grinding to a halt. Of course, it's never been free, as anyone who has paid €25 for Wi-Fi access in a hotel can tell you. But, it's the policing of this usage and the way in which it can be monetised in creative ways that is going to be important. Fair usage, bill shock and that kind of thing is one issue, but the real money is going to reside in two directions.

Differentiation, Differentiation, Differentiation

Just as in the early days of IMS, many of the optical equipment vendors seemed focused on the features of their products. It's bigger; it's faster; it's shinier. Mine comes in better colours. We exaggerate somewhat, but it was striking how little attention was given to the value proposition behind the solution. What's more, few vendors sought to achieve differentiation between each other, or, perhaps more importantly, in terms of the differentiation that can be achieved by their customers, if they adopt their solutions.

Commoditisation: Much needed in the service enabling layer

Commoditisation is an inevitable consequence of success. With increased demand, mass production and economies of scale can take effect and a previously specialised item can become a commodity. Of course, it doesn't always happen, but in today's telecoms industry, there seems to be increased pressure for network elements to become more commoditised. Or perhaps in today's language, commodity has become a synonym for cheap.
